Program Overview
Walker Prep's Score Accelerator program combines live Zoom instruction with access to Dave Walker's full SAT Reading & Writing Mastery Course. Your student will receive specific unit assignments, practice materials, and feedback throughout the program. This guide covers what parents need to know to support their student's progress.
Practice Test Strategy
Before the course begins:
Take Official SAT Practice Test 4 via College Board's Bluebook app (free) to establish a baseline score
Use Walker Prep's Question Type Inventory to analyze specific question types missed: https://walkertestprep.com/question-type-inventory
DO NOT take additional practice tests until assigned
AVOID third-party practice tests entirely
Why this matters: A common mistake is burning through official practice tests too early in the process. The College Board currently offers only 7 official practice tests, making them a valuable and limited resource. These tests are most useful as measurement tools, and there's no sense in measuring progress before there's been sufficient time for meaningful improvement. I will begin assigning practice tests in Week 4, allowing for roughly one per week through the end of the course.
Note: Practice Tests 1–3 have been retired by the College Board. Practice Test 4 is now the first available official practice test.
Checking Practice Test Answers
For practice tests taken in the Bluebook app, students can check their answers directly in the app or at mypractice.collegeboard.org.
I do not recommend using College Board or third-party answer explanations for the Reading & Writing section. These explanations are not always helpful for learning the strategies needed to achieve scores in the 90th–99th percentile range—that's what the course is for.
What to Expect During the Program
Live Zoom sessions twice weekly (Tuesdays and Saturdays), with bonus sessions in the final two weeks
Unit assignments posted in Google Classroom after each session
Access to the Score Accelerator Lab, where students can post questions 24/7 and receive a response within 12 hours
Practice test assignments beginning in Week 4
Students should complete assigned units and practice materials before the next session. Each session builds on previous content, so staying current with assignments is essential.
Optional Independent Study
The following materials are available in the course but are not typically covered in depth during live sessions due to time constraints. Students who have the bandwidth may benefit from working through these independently:
Vocabulary Master Lists (Units 1–16) The course contains a vocabulary list with words that commonly appear on the SAT. Students can study these lists and complete the corresponding vocabulary quizzes at their own pace.
Transition Master Lists (Unit 14) Transitions are tested frequently on the SAT. The master lists in Unit 14 provide comprehensive coverage of transition words and phrases organized by category.
SAT Grammar Crash Course (Units 6, 8, and 9) These units cover foundational grammar concepts. Students who feel less confident in grammar may benefit from working through these early in the program.
Progress Monitoring
Review emailed quiz results regularly
Ensure assigned units and practice materials are being completed on schedule
Monitor practice test scores and use the QTI to identify patterns in missed questions
Encourage your student to use the Score Accelerator Lab for questions between sessions
Tips for Success
Maintain a consistent study schedule
Complete all assigned units and practice before each session
Don't skip ahead—units are assigned in a deliberate sequence
Use Walker Prep's QTI to analyze all practice test misses
Save official practice tests for when they are assigned
